Books and Movies

For those of you who eat, sleep, drink and thrive on all things travel, I have decided to give you something else to divulge - books and movies. Just imagine, without the expertise of Rick Steves or Rolf Potts, where would some of us find the courage to pack up our suitcases, buy a plane ticket and jet off to a country thousands of miles from home?

Without memoirs from Alice Steinbach, Peter Mayle, Frances Mayes, Elizabeth Gilbert, Bill Bryson or Paul Theroux, who would be aspire to become? Whose stories would we close our eyes and imagine ourselves walking the streets of Paris, buying a house in Tuscany, eating luxurious food in Provence or receiving words of wisdom from a medicine man in Bali?

Without movies, such as A Good Year, Midnight in Paris, Into the Wild, The Beach, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel or even National Lampoon's European Vacation, what would create a spark and need for adventure like movies do? What would provide us with the visual element that creates an intrigue in wanting to learn more about a place?

Without books and movies to inspire us and keep us dreaming, travelers (or at least myself) would find very little to be excited about. Photographs can tell a story in many ways that words cannot, however, to add the story makes it all more real and exciting. This list may tend to grow longer and longer in the future :)
